Guwahati: Apart from many other “important files”, including those relating to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and bank credit-deposits, sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), who raided the residence of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi in Guwahati, Assam on Thursday morning, also reportedly asked his wife, Gitashree Tamuly, to look for some files related to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The NIA team also serious studied a file bearing documents of a leading Assamese news channel, reportedly owned by a powerful minister of Assam government.

Responding to queries raised by the visiting media persons at her residence at Nizarapar area of Chandmari Colony in Guwahati on Thursday, Gogoi’s wife, Gitashree Tamuly, said that the visiting NIA officials were also looking for some files related to the BJP. “There are some files relating to the election manifestos of the BJP. They went through these files but did not take them. However, they extensively studied these during the raid,” Tamuly added.

Regarding the file related to the leading Assamese news channel, she further said that the NIA officials studied the file during the raid but she expressed her ignorance whether they took away the file or not.

“One of the officials also asked me why we hold the agitations during the time of the year when the Japanese Prime Minister was visiting the city to ink treaties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Gogoi’s wife told a section of media persons after the raid.

The NIA team, which entered the residence of Akhil Gogoi at 7 am and continued till 10.30 am on Thursday, also conducted a raid at the head office of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) at Gandhi Basti area of the city on Thursday.

The NIA team seized files related to the NHPC, his PAN card, bank passbook and other bank details of the leader. However, they were also looking for files related to Kaziranga Orchid and Bio-diversity Park.

Responding to NIA officials’ query of Gogoi’s association with terror activities, his wife said, “I don’t see Akhil’s association with terror groups. It’s been over a decade that we are staying together but I have not seen any such activities of him in the past. They won’t be able to prove their charges unless they manage to make manipulation of papers to gain their vested interests.”
