Crackdown comes weeks after directorate of vigilance & anti-corruption arrested two senior officials of APDCL from Tezpur town over similar crime
Tinsukia: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) police station has arrested the president of Amiyapur Gaon Panchayat from Assam's Sonitpur district on Friday night for demanding and accepting bribe.
The crackdown comes weeks after the directorate of vigilance & anti-corruption arrested two senior officials of APDCL from Tezpur town in Assam's Sonitpur district for demanding and accepting bribe.
According to sources, the accused, identified as Julon Kr Nath, was demanding illegal gratification from one Dulal Nath in the pretext of clearing remaining bill amounting to Rs 1,38,000. "The accused was arrested red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 5,000 and a bank cheque amounting to rupees 35,000 from the complainant," the sources said.
The money has been seized from the possession of the accused, they added.
The complainant had supplies material totalling to Rs 4.9 lakh for the construction work of an RCC culvert under Madhabpur, Bongaon, said sources, adding, "As the complainant was unwilling to pay the bribe to the said public servant, he approached the ACB PS in the directorate of vigilance & anti-corruption, Assam, and accordingly a trap was laid and accused arrested."
A case (ACB PS Case No. 17/2019) under Section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has been registered in this connection and further investigation is under way, said sources, adding: "He will be produced in the court of special judge in Guwahati on Saturday."
Speaking with EastMojo, the directorate of IGP, directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption, Anurag Tankha has appealed the citizens to come forward and share information of corruption cases with senior officers of the directorate.
