Thousand of protesters defy curfew and stage protest across Guwahati. City continues to burn despite Army flag march and heavy security presence.
Guwahati: The anti-CAB protests in Guwahati took a tragic turn on Thursday. Two protesters, one a 17 year old boy died due to police firing in two separate locations of Guwahati.
Dipanjal Das suffered bullet injuries during police firing at Lachit Nagar area of Guwahati. He was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
“Protesters were gathered in Lachit Nagar. They were blocking the roads, burning tires and when a convoy of the security personnel reached the spot, some protester started pelting stones. Police opened fire towards the ground. One of the bullet hit 17 year old Dipanal in his ribs. He was then rushed to the medical college,” Prandeep Das who was present at the incident site, told EastMojo.
The other death has been reported from Hatigaon area of Guwahati.
Four protesters have been injured in the police firing, one critically. All are undergoing treatment in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Guwahati has been witnessing massive protests since early Thursday morning despite curfew being imposed. Thousands of protesters, mostly students have come out on the streets of Guwahati to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Lok Sabha had passed the Bill on Monday.
Protesters resorted to stone pelting and clashed with the security personnel. Police resorted to firing and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
