Guwahati: After a long wait of eight years Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden -- also known as Guwahati Zoo -- has got a pair of giraffes to celebrate.

While the female giraffe was welcomed to the zoo on Saturday, the male one arrived on Thursday morning, covering a distance of 3,300 km, from the Mysore Zoo in Karnataka.

State environment and forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya tweeted: "After travelling an epic journey of 3300 kms the male giraffe from Mysore zoo reached @assamzoo today morning. The male and the female are happy together. It will again be part of the Assam State Zoo after a long gap of 8 years."

On Saturday, the female giraffe arrived from the Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan in Patna in an exchange programme approved by Delhi's Central Zoo Authority. She was welcomed by the state environment and forest minister.
