Assam: Tinsukia youth beaten to death over ‘mobile theft’ charges

Victim allegedly thrashed by group of men in No 4 Shantipur village; succumbs to injuries in hospital; police to file suo motu case based on post-mortem report

Tinsukia: In a horrifying incident, a youth was allegedly beaten to death over allegation of theft of a mobile phone by a group of men at 4 number Shantipur village in Assam's Tinsukia district.

The victim, identified as Raju Doley, died at a local hospital on Friday, a night after the incident took place.

According to sources, the youth was beaten by a group of youths from the same village on charges of stealing a mobile phone.

Speaking with EastMojo, Sadiya SP Debojit Deori said, as per information available, the injured youth returned to his house around 2 pm in the night, following a fight with a group of youths from the same village on allegations of mobile theft, and slept. "The family members took him to hospital in the morning where he succumbed to his injuries," Deori said.

"We received the information from the hospital," Deori said, adding that the police have registered a U/D case as the family is resisting to file an FIR. "There are injuries on the victim's legs. We are awaiting for the post-mortem report to find out the cause of death. If the report reveals of fatal injuries, which resulted into death, we shall take a suo motu case under Section 302 of the IPC," he added.
