Assam: Civil bodies demand probe into Dibrugarh man’s killing

State govt announces ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to family of deceased; Dibrugarh DC assures that he will personally monitor investigation in coordination with SP

Tinsukia: The Eastern Assam Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Citizens of Dibrugarh and Hindu Kranti Dal (Assam) on Thursday submitted separate memoranda to the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Assam’s Dibrugarh district demanding immediate arrest of the culprits behind the murder of an employee of a flour mill, Om Prakash Agrwalla.

The civil body organisations also demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh and a government job to the kin of the deceased as he was the sole bread earner of the family.

As per sources, the civil society groups also demanded immediate identification and arrest of the culprits involved in the gruesome killing of Agarwal. The organisations have also demanded for tightening of security arrangements across the district as a number of thefts, burglaries and snatching cases were being reported from the market area of Dibrugarh town. The organisations also demanded adequate installation of streetlights across the town and CCTV cameras at sensitive points.

Meanwhile, Dibrugarh MLA Prashanta Phukan, Lahoal MLA Rituparna Baruah, Dibrugarh DC Pallav Gopal Jha, ADC Dipu Kr Deka, DIPRO Sulakchana Mithi Kachari on Thursday visited the residence of the deceased at Graham Bazar in Dibrugarh town and expressed their deepest condolences to bereaved family.

The delegation of high officials also handed over a sanction letter of Rs 5 lakh to the next to kin of the deceased as an ex gratia amount provided by the state government. They also assured the bereaved family members to provide with all kinds of possible help from their part.

Dibrugarh DC Pallav Gopal Jha assured that he is personally monitoring the investigations in coordination with the Superintendent of Police.

Notably according to a source, based on initial leads, Dibrugarh district police has picked up five persons for interrogations.

Significantly, Om Prakash Agarwal was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Graham Bazar area nearly 100 metres away from his residence at Dibrugarh town. He sustained two bullet injuries on his stomach and succumbed to the injuries.
