Assam: Special review committee visits Kokrajhar detention centre

There are 6 detention centres across state; committee members will visit all of them to take stock of the condition of inmates; to submit report within 3 months

Kokrajhar: An eight-member delegation of a special review committee on detention centres, led by its chairman, Debojit Mukherjee, visited the detention centre in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Tuesday.

Besides deputy inspector of police (border) Mukherjee, the other members of the delegation included district judge (retired) H Singh, IGP of prisons Barnali Sharma; AIG of prisons D Saikia, and several senior police officials.

The delegation members met the camp inmates and took stock about their health conditions, medical facilities, etc.

There are 142 inmates, including 14 minors currently lodged in the Kokrajhar detention centre.

Notably, there are six detention centres across the state. The state government formed the committee to take stock of the centres and bring welfare to the inmates. The committee has started visiting various detention centres across the state. The committee will visit Goalpara detention centre on November 21.

Mukherjee said that his team members are taking note about health, education and other areas of concern of the inmates.

The committee is submitting the report to the government within three months. “We have come here to meet inmates, who are living in the detention centre and taking note on health, education and medical condition of the inmates,” he added.
