NSCN-R hideouts busted in Assam; 2 arrested, arms recovered

Kohima: The Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the police, busted a hideout belonging to the insurgent group NSCN-R near the Ramgaizang village of Cachar district in Assam on Saturday.

An official statement from PRO Defence (Kohima) Lt Col Sumit Sharma said that two active rebels of NSCN (R) and ZUF were apprehended. One AK-56 Rifle, a huge cache of ammunition and other items also recovered from their possession.

The operation was carried out on receipt of specific input of armed cadres hiding near Ramgaizang village where the Assam Rifles, on Saturday morning, swiftly launched the operation in the area.

The apprehended militants were identified as SS second lieutenant Pougonglong (28) of NSCN-R and SS capt Sagu Rongmai (40) of ZUF.

The statement said that both the rebels were involved in extortion, kidnapping and criminal activities in Zeliangrong region (Cachar, Noney, N C Hills and Jiribam district). The arrested rebels were also in possession of incriminating documents revealing their association with NSCN-R faction and ZUF.

"These cadres, carried out extortion and illegal tax collection activities which impeded the development work in the region and compounded the miseries of local population and business community,” it said.

Meanwhile, ZUF, as reported by EastMojo in October, already signed a ceasefire agreement with Naga peace talk interlocutor and Nagaland governor RN Ravi in New Delhi recently.

Following the inking of the agreement, the ZUF, a militant group founded in the year 2011, has already been dissolved permanently and has merged with the GPRN/NSCN, headed by of N Kitovi Zhimomi.
