Just Oink! to bring Northeast’s pork curries on e-com platforms

Started by Assam’s Arohan Foods, the ready-to-eat range will offer delicacies from each of the 8 states of region; can be an ideal product for Army men, backpackers

Guwahati: The thought of having authentic Northeast flavoured pork at a faraway land without spending countless hours gathering the ingredients and cooking is soon going to be possible with Just Oink! ready-to-eat curries.

Started by Assam’s Arohan Foods, the Just Oink! range will offer ready-to-eat pork delicacies from each of the eight Northeastern states.

Speaking with EastMojo about the products on the sidelines of 7th Young Leaders Connect in New Delhi recently, Arindom Hazarika, the co-founder of Arohan Foods, said they already have preparations from Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, and are soon coming out with ranges from the remaining states.

While meat products require cold storage facility, and a pan-India cold chain and distribution system are difficult, Hazarika's ready-to-eat pork curries are "perfect for e-commerce platforms", thanks to a technology they are developing in association with ICAR-NRC on Pig, a research centre in Guwahati. This makes their products shelf-stable.

Talking about his existing brand, Choice Pork Natural, which is seven years old, Hazarika said: “Because our product needs a cold chain and temperatures of minus 18 degrees, it is difficult to reach customers across India, despite having fans of our product in places like Mumbai, Andaman and Chandigarh.

"So, we came up with this new product and this will represent all eight states, unique products from eight states, unique ingredients from eight states, unique spices from eight states. So you get a flavour of entire Northeast meat, pork in particular, and this is ready to eat and shelf stable; we can go on retail stores. It can be also taken by the Army or backpackers or mountaineers, whenever they are packing food for a long time, it can go on cruise ships too," explained Hazarika.

Another unique feature of the product is access to information about the self-help group (SHG) and the farmers producing it.

Calling it to be "the first of its kind in the country", Hazarika said, "We will have a QR code with which you can trace the pack and the badge to the exact SHG and the farm that it came from, when the animal received his vaccination, when the animal was brought into the processing unit. You'll have all that data."
