Assam: Exodus continues in ULFA-I, 6 rebels lay down weapons

Militants deposit a huge cache of arms & ammunition including 6 AK series rifles, 395 live rounds, 13 magazines & 2 grenades with security forces in Tinsukia

Tinsukia: In yet another blow to banned insurgent group ULFA (independent), six rebels surrendered before security forces led by Tinsukia SP Shiladitya Chetia at Margherita in Assam's Tinsukia district on Friday.

The militants deposited a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including 6 AK series rifles (4 MQ 81 and 2 AK 56), 395 live rounds of ammunition, 13 magazines and 2 grenades.

The development comes two days after ULFA-I released a tea garden employee who was held in captivity and is a reflection of the continuing exodus of from the outfit post the offensive launched by Tatmadaw (Myanmarese army) against the banned outfit of Northeast in Myanmar.

Speaking with EastMojo, Chetia said, based on a specific input received by district police regarding presence of ULFA-I rebels, a search operation was launched jointly by the police, Army's 9 Rajrif and 21 PARA special forces, 210 Cobra commandos and 68 CRPF.

"Four ULFA-I cadres came up to lay down their arms and surrender," he added.

The cadres have been identified as self-styled Second Lt Pabitro Asom alias Phamen Moran, a resident of Kakopathar who joined ULFA in January 2010, Corporal Aluk Asom alias Mintu Moran, a resident of Kakopathar who joined Ulfa in April 2017, Lance Corporal Merchant Asom alias Pranjit Moran, a resident of Baghjan who joined the outfit in April 2017 and Lance Corporal Abon Asom alias Rajib Moran, a resident of Doomdooma who joined Ulfa in April 2017.

Chetia said, "Based on interrogation of the four rebels, another specific input received by the district police about the presence of two more ULFA-I cadres with arms in Tekri area under Pengree police station was corroborated. Immediately, another search operation led by Tinsukia police jointly with Army's 3 Garhwal regiment and 21 PARA special forces and Cobra commandos and CRPF was launched."

"Two ULFA-I cadres were compelled to surrender at around 1530 hrs from Tekri Mangaon in Tinsukia district, Chetia said, adding, "The cadres have been identified as Corporal Sonjuk Asom alias Milan Jyoti Mohanto, a resident of Barekuri who joined Ulfa in 2010 and Lance Corporal Puron Asom alias Kolyan Boruah, a resident of Makum who joined the outfit in 2017.
