Assam commission unhappy over increasing crimes against women

4-member delegation takes stock of prevailing situation in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, emphasises on safety & security of women and child protection

Kokrajhar: Assam State Commission for Women chairperson Chikimiki Talukdar on Saturday expressed serious concern over the atrocities on women and child-lifting cases which are becoming rampant in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

A four-member team of the commission, including chairperson Talukdar, and members Kabita Basumatary, Niyati Dey and Dhira Talukdar visited Kokrajhar, and is scheduled to visit Chirang on Saturday evening.

The delegation took stock of the prevailing situation in Kokrajhar and met senior district administration and police officials at the Circuit House.

The team discussed on the existing scenario and emphasised on the safety and security of women and child protection in society.

Recently, four persons were arrested and two persons reportedly physically assaulted for their alleged involvement in incidents involving spraying their victims, atrocities on women and child-lifting cases in Kokrajhar district.

Also, a woman was attacked with sharp weapons that left serious injuries at Banduguri under Sidli police station of Chirang district on September 9.

Talukdar said that she and her team visited in Kokrajhar to take stock about the scene as the happenings in the area have been creating resented and chaos among the citizens. She expressed concern over the situation as crimes on women and girl children are on a rise. She said that necessary awareness campaign and measures are to be undertaken to create awareness and social integrity in society.

Talukdar said that she will report to the state government about the prevailing situation in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

Meanwhile, several women organisations, NGOs and social activists met the women delegation team and urged the chairperson to take stern initiatives against widespread anti-social activities which are creating unhealthy environment in society for quite some time now.
