Guwahati: In yet another incident of violence against medical practitioners in the state, a doctor and his wife were assaulted by a group of men during Dussehra celebrations at Dhekiajuli locality in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Tuesday.
As per sources, Dr Kamal Jal, a physician from Sirajuli Model Hospital in Sonitpur district, and his wife Jharna Rani Karan Jal were attacked by a group of local youths near Belsiri Tea Estate of Dhekiajuli when they were returning home in their personal car from Dussehra celebrations late on Tuesday evening.
Speaking with Eastmojo, the officer-in-charge of Dhekiajuli PS, Mahendra Mohan Patowary, said that the duo allegedly refused to give side to a motorcycle behind them. Upon this, the biker got angry and along with some other locals stopped their car and thrashed them.
“The two main accused behind the attack were intoxicated,” Patowary added.
While Dr Jal was critically injured with one of his fingers broken, his wife, Jharna, also received minor injuries.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Dhekiajuli police station and a youth involved in the attack has been arrested. The arrested youth has been identified as Amit Kumar Debnath, a resident of Dhekiajuli town, while the other accused -- Akash Debnath -- is still on the run.
