Tinsukia: An elderly man was beaten up by a mob on suspicion of being a child lifter in Assam's Tinsukia district on Thursday night.

The police, however, are yet to identify the victim.

According to sources, the man attempted to lure a child at Parbotia locality. "The kid shouted and called her mom which alerted the accused," sources added.

"He shouted at me from the other side of the road asking me to go with him," the seven-year-old child told media persons, adding: "I called my mother after which he started running."

Later, her mother told media persons that she was inside her house when the child shouted saying someone had come to take him. "I saw the person and shouted at him following which he started running and locals caught hold of him," she said.

"We informed Tinsukia Sadar police immediately. A police party took him away," an eyewitness told media persons.

Speaking with Eastmojo, Dilip Chetia of Tinsukia police station said, "The person seem to be a nomad. He does not know about his home. We have detained him for questioning and investigating the allegations."

In a major twist, a resident of Makum Road, who did not wished to be named, told EastMojo, "After seeing the video of the alleged child lifter I could relate him to a person I saw in front of my house a day before, trying to lure my child.

"I immediately switched on my CCTV and played back the footage to find him in front of my house trying to give something to my child who was playing when I intervened and asked him to go," he said, adding, "Then I did not had any idea that he could be a child lifter but now I have serious reservations."

"There were two persons who were waiting at a pan shop on the opposite side of the road. This person tried to signal them about something which I am able to relate now," he added.
