The incident took place in Tinsukia town on Monday night; not clear whether domestic help decamped with cash, valuables or was waiting for sedatives to work, say sources

Tinsukia: Four members of a family were rendered unconscious at their house in Assam's Tinsukia town after their domestic help allegedly gave them food laced with sedatives.

The incident took place in the residence of Ramjeevan Sureka, situated on the first floor of a building on DM Lohia Road on Monday night.

Speaking with EastMojo, Goldee Agarwal, neighbour of the Surekas, said, "My wife, Bunty, received a call from an unknown number around 10.15 pm. The caller turned out to be Sureka's daughter, Prerna, who informed her that she and her son were feeling dizzy after having their dinner."

"My mother is also not responding, she told in a nervous tone asking us to come down immediately," Agarwal said, adding, "Prerna told them that she ate very less that night, suggesting why the sedative probably did not work on her as quickly as it did on her mother."

Agarwal and his wife rushed to first floor and found out that the gate was open, lights on and Prerna with her son were in the hall.

That was when the Agarwals found Prerna's mother Sushila Devi lying unconscious in her room. "In between, the maid came in from outside. Prerna asked her where was she all the time to which she responded that she had gone to a pan shop and ran away," Agarwal said.

"We called their staff and learnt that Ramjeevan [Sureka] went to their friend's place after dinner. As he was not responding to calls, we rushed there to inform him but found two persons holding him in an unconscious state," Agarwal said, adding that they then immediately rushed him to civil hospital.

According to sources, all the four persons were referred to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh where they are undergoing treatment. "It is not clear whether the maid decamped with cash and valuables or was waiting for the sedatives to work," the sources said.

The maid was hired only recently, the sources added.

Speaking with EastMojo, Dinesh Chetia of Tinsukia police said that they were yet to receive any formal complaint regarding the incident.

As per sources, Sureka's son, Sikandar, and her wife were out of Assam. After learning about the incident, he took the morning flight and landed at Mohanbari from where he went to the hospital directly.

Till the time of filing the report, Sushila Devi and her daughter Prerna were still said to be unconscious.
