Guwahati: Assam athlete Monoj Leen Debnath won a silver medal in ‘D.1 Armwrestling China Open’ held in Shenzhen, China recently.

The 25-year-old Dibrugarh armwrestler went down to Russia’s Egor Leshtaev in the finals of the 63-kg senior men’s category.

While Russia bagged the gold, India and Japan clinched the silver and bronze medals in the 63-kg senior men’s category of D.1 Armwrestling China Open held in Shenzen recently

Meanwhile, Russia bagged the gold medal while Japan won the bronze in the category.

Speaking with EastMojo, Debnath said, “It was my first international medal and I am so happy that I could win a silver for my country.”

“I would also like to thank my parents, my trainer Arup Rajkonwar from Dibrugarh and all well-wishers who have supported me the entire time,” he added.

Monoj Leen Debnath is currently ranked world No 2 in the 63-kg senior men’s category

“I have spent a lot of time in practising and preparing myself in the past three months. And I was very determined and focused for the championship. I didn’t even celebrate my last birthday which was on September 4,” Debnath added.

Altogether 32 countries took part in the event. Debnath won a total of six bouts against countries such as Korea, Japan, China, Ukraine and Hong Kong.

Currently ranked world No 2 in the 63-kg senior men’s category, Debnath will now prepare for Zloty Tur World Cup in Poland scheduled to be held in December this year.
