Guwahati: The Assam Police has placed two police personnel under suspension with immediate effect after they were allegedly found involved in beating up a pregnant woman, along with two of her sisters, at a police outpost in Assam Darrang’s district on September 8.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, too, has asked DIG, Central Western Range to investigate into the matter.

As per sources, the woman, along with her two sisters, was picked up by the officer -n charge of Burha police outpost, Mahendra Sarmah, from Satgaon and Six Mile area of Guwahati on September 8 night to seek information about their missing brother who had recently eloped with a girl.

Shockingly, all the three sisters have alleged that they were brutally tortured overnight by SI Sarmah, two constables and a police woman during interrogation inside the police outpost.

The three sisters further alleged that they were stripped naked and brutally beaten up with batons, including at private parts, by the police officials at the outpost.

Significantly, the entire incident came to light only after one of the sisters filed a complaint with the Darrang Superintendent of Police (SP) on September 10, alleging about the severity of torture they had to face in the hands of the police personnel at the Burha police outpost.

The violence meted out by cops was so brutal that the pregnant woman, among the three sisters, was allegedly declared unfit to continue with her pregnancy by doctors when consulted.

Meanwhile, the SI of Burha police outpost, Mahendra Sarmah, along with woman constable, Binita Boro, have been put under suspension for their alleged involvement in the case with immediate effect.

Interestingly, the district police administration has initiated an investigation into the brutal incident but there is no action against the accused police officials as it nearly completed a week after filing of the complaint.
