Guwahati: In a shocking incident, power supply to Assam’s Biswanath, Lakhimpur and Majuli districts was cut off for nearly five hours after a youth tried to commit suicide by climbing a 132-kilo Volt transmission tower in Biswanath district late on Sunday evening.

As per sources, the youth -- identified as Cheniram Orang -- is a native of Pub Jinjia village and climbed the high-tension power tower allegedly after an argument with his family members.

After being informed about the incident, power transmission was immediately cut off by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited as a precautionary measure. This led to a total blackout at nearby Gohpur, Lakhimpur and Majuli since 5 pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, top officials from the police and district administration visited the spot to take stock of the situation.

Despite several attempts by the officials to convince him, Orang refused to climb down and further threatened to jump off the tower if someone tried to rescue him.

Speaking to the media, a police official then said that they tried every possible way to convince the youth, but in vain. The youth had come from Chennai just a day ago and was apparently upset over a tiff with his family members.

“It was raining heavily but we continued with our rescue operation,” the the police official added.

However, as rescue attempts were underway to bring down the youth, he suddenly slipped off and fell to the ground. The youth received severe injuries after hitting the beams and bars of the tower.

As per latest reports, Orang was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital and was later referred to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, in a sigh of relief, power supply to Gohpur, Lakhimpur and Majuli including Biswanath district was later restored after a long shutdown that went on for nearly five hours on Sunday evening.
