Tinsukia: The court of special judge in Guwahati sentenced a junior engineer of Hojai's Dholpukhuri Development Block, Jayanta Goswami, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 to sign a bill under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in 2016.
Special judge Gautom Baruah convicted Goswami under section 7/13(1)(d)(II)/13(2) PC Act 1988 and sentenced him to imprisonment of four years and a fine Rs 40,000.
According to sources, "Based on the complaint lodged by Birendra Prasad Mallah, a member [of] anchalik panchayat of Nandapur GP under Dholphukhuri Block in Assam's Hojai district, regarding demand of a bribe money of Rs 10,000 for signing on the bill of a construction works under PMGSY schemes in undertaken in the block."
"A case was registered vide ACB PS Case No. 06/2016 under section 7/13(1)(d)(II)/13(2) PC Act 1988 and a trap was laid in July 2016 by a team of officers of vigilance and anti-corruption branch, led by Jitendra Chakraborty, and the accused Goswami was arrested red handed while accepting the bribe money of Rs 10,000 from the complainant at the former’s office premises," the source added.
