Tinsukia: Dibrugarh superintendent of police (SP) Subashini Shankaran, an IPS officer, has been transferred to the 10th Assam Police Battalion (APBn) on Friday, barely eight months after she took charge as top cop of this upper Assam district.

While her transfer order came on January 11, she joined as the SP of Dibrugarh on January 22.

The development comes within three days after incidents of vandalism were reported during a Muharram procession in Dibrugarh town on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of two persons.

The police arrested Furkan Hussain, a resident of Mirgabag locality, on Wednesday night, and Javed Akhtar Khan alias Azad Khan of Panchali locality on Thursday morning.

Speaking to the media, then SP Shankaran had said that no person found guilty would be spared. "The law will take its own course of action," she had said.

According to sources, Gautam Bora has now been posted as the new SP of Dibrugarh.

"Subashini is a diligent officer. She never heard others or bow down to political pressure, rather followed the rule book," an officer, who did not wish to be named, told EastMojo. "It is surprising to hear about her sudden transfer. It seems that she had made some very influential and powerful persons upset. The recent incident [vandalism] only worked as a trigger to give cover to the move," the officer added.

Another officer of the rank of officer-in-charge of police station said that the officer was really good. She hardly cared for any pressure and ensured no one came between the law. "We had her full support to take action as per the law on anyone who was guilty, despite his or her clout. Her transfer is not just surprising but also a setback for upright officers," the officer said.

According to sources, the government has not given any reason for her sudden transfer without completing the term of three years as per laid-down rules.
