The items were smuggled from neighbouring Meghalaya; recovered by police & student leaders from two hotels at Umlapher and Rongnagor in Baithalangso
Guwahati: Members of Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) with help from local police seized nearly 15 cartons of illicit liquor from two hotels in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Thursday.
The bottles of illicit liquor were smuggled from the neighbouring state of Meghalaya. They were recovered by the police and student leaders from two hotels at the Umlapher and Rongnagor areas of Baithalangso.
As per sources, KSA members of Umsarang branch and Assam police personnel posted at Ulukunchi outpost and Sabuda border outpost in the district conducted a raid after receiving a tip-off that a large quantity of illicit liquor was smuggled from Meghalaya and was kept at two hotels in the locality.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested the owners of the two hotels, identified as Koilas Bondhari and Bijoy Tamang, respectively, for allegedly keeping the smuggled liquor from Meghalaya.
The search team was led by Ulukunchi police outpost in-charge Horen Hazarika and Sabuda border outpost in-charge M Ali. The police team was accompanied by KSA’s Umsang branch president Dorsing Terang and other members of the students’ body.
Speaking to media persons, Terang said that the KSA will take strong action against any house or hotel found to be involved in such kind of illegal activities in the locality.
