In viral video, two policemen are seen demanding ‘monthly collection’ in Khatkhati area of Karbi Anglong district; SP promises strict action against erring cops
Diphu: In a recent video that is now doing the rounds of social media, two policemen in Khatkati area of Assam’s Karbi Anglong have been caught on camera taking money from an auto rickshaw driver as part of their ‘monthly collection’. The illegal activity was exposed when the video was uploaded and it started circulating on social media platforms.
In the video, the policemen can be seen asking money from an auto rickshaw driver by saying [when loosely translated]: "Give the monthly collection, it’s already 14th of the month. Since many have paid their monthly, you have to pay today." In response, the auto rickshaw driver is heard saying that it was his first trip of the day.
The cops, however, don’t relent. “No way, you have to give [money] today,” they are heard saying in the short video.
Meanwhile, Karbi Anglong SP Gaurav Upadhyay clarified regarding the incident. "It came to my notice yesterday. Will remove this person from service and take strict action. Also massive drive will be undertaken against autos as per new MV Act provisions to bring them in full compliance,” he said.
Similar incidents have tarnished the image of the police administration in Diphu district, the latest being on July 30 when a group of journalists from Karbi Anglong caught some police personnel red-handed in Manja check-point where a truck driver confessed to paying a sum of Rs 300 as bribe to the police personnel.
