Tinsukia: The vigilance and anti-corruption department (V&AC) on Wednesday evening arrested Golaghat's district sports officer Manorama Das from her office in this upper Assam town for accepting a bribe of RS 30,000.

The principal of Dhekial HS School, Nripen Chandra Dutta, had filed a complaint with the police alleging that Das had demanded a bribe for counter signature of the utilisation certificate required to get the balance amount sanctioned for upgrade of the school playground.

Talking to EastMojo, Inspector General of Police (vigilance and anti-corruption department) Anurag Tankha said that based on a complaint from the principal of a local school, a joint team of officers from the department and Golaghat police laid a trap and caught the woman officer red-handed while accepting the bribe. "Connected documents have also been seized from the office of the district sports office in Golaghat," he said.

"The state government had given a sanction of Rs 20 lakh for upgrade of the playground of the Dhekial HS School, under Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unayan Yojana, out of which Rs 8 lakh was already released and utilised," Tankha said, adding: "In order to get the remaining Rs 12 lakh, the utilisation certificate had to be countersigned by the Golaghat district sports officer."

When the complainant approached the officer, who had supervised the upgrade works of the playground for counter signature of the utilisation certificate, she demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000, said Tankha.

The complainant was unwilling to pay the bribe and approached the Golaghat police for help. "The superintendent of Golaghat police, Pushpraj Singh, requested the V&AC department, after which a joint operation was launched, and the complainant was asked to make the payment today. A trap was already in place and as money changed hands, the team arrested the officer red-handed," Tankha added.

According to Tankha, the accused has been arrested and will be forwarded to the special court in Guwahati on Thursday. "A case has been registered at Golaghat PS Case No. 891/2019 under section 7(a) of the PC Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) and further investigation is being carried on," he added.
