Guwahati: With the nation celebrating the 75th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, let us take a look back at the historical accord that the youngest and the sixth Prime Minister of India signed to bring peace in Northeast India.

Gandhi, born on August 20, 1944 in Bombay, assumed the office of PM after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, the then PM of India, in 1984.

Though his start seemed a little wobbly, Gandhi in his tenure as the PM of the biggest democracy in the world ensured to leave behind remarkable footprints in the making of India as a powerful state in world politics. During his term, Northeast was in a big turmoil of social unrest and political conflict. The region was in utter mayhem.

With the uprising of a freedom struggle in Mizoram led by Laldenga due to the “negligence” of the government at the Centre during the great famine of Mautam in the late 1950s, the young PM stepped in to take control of the situation. He signed the Mizoram Peace Accord, which is one of the most remarkable and successful peace agreements signed in 1986 after India got its independence from the British Raj in 1947. The accord brought an end to the violence and guerrilla warfare in Mizoram.

Another major leap taken by the Centre in the Northeast during his term was the signing of the Assam peace accord on August 15, 1985. It was one of the biggest memorandums of settlement in the history of Assam, putting an end to the Assam agitation. The six long years of agitation demanding the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants in the state of Assam was initiated by the powerful All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in 1979 and culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord in which the young Prime Minister played a key role.
