Tinsukia: A 21-year-old girl was found dead at Barborooah tea estate in Assam's Dibrugarh district on Saturday.

As per sources, the deceased girl, who was working as a contractual labourer at the Brahmaputra Polymer Cracker Limited (BCPL), was a resident of Lane 3 of the tea estate. She reportedly was found dead in a drain near Lane 5 of the garden. The body of the girl with a dupatta tied around her neck was spotted by workers of the garden when they were plucking tea leaves in the morning.

At first, the workers noticed some belongings of the girl, including a mobile phone, bag and an umbrella, lying on the ground. Following this, they searched the entire area suspecting something amiss and, finally, found the body in the drain. The place where the body was recovered is a ‘short-cut’ route to the BCPL township, mostly preferred by locals.

Speaking over the incident to EastMojo, Asom Chah Janagusthee Jatiya Mohasava general secretary Lobin Karmakar expressed grief and said that it was shocking. “Who would know that such an incident might happen to the girl who stepped out of her house to reach her workplace near the BCPL township?” he asked.

Karmakar further said that some people from the crowd later informed about the incident to the local police station suspecting it to be a case of rape and murder.

Meanwhile, the body has been sent for postmortem and a case of rape and murder has been registered at the Bezbaruah police station in Dibrugarh by family members of the deceased girl.

“No one has been arrested so far," a source in the police told EastMojo.

According to a senior level police officer, who did not wish to be named, prima facie, it doesn't seem to be a case of rape. "However, we are waiting for the post-mortem report to come and take the investigation forward," the officer said.

"We are working on all angles," the source added.
