The Kokrajhar girl, currently posted with the state police department, clinches medal at World Police and Fire Games currently underway at Chengdu
Guwahati: Assam’s Tunlai Narzary, currently working with the 20th Assam Police (IR) Battalion, clinched a gold medal in shot-put at the World Police and Fire Games currently underway at Chengdu in China.
To congratulate on her victory, Assam Police took to Twitter to express their gratitude. “The Golden Shot Put! Heartiest Congratulations to our very own Smti. Tunlai Narzary of 20th AP (IR) Bn on winning the Gold Medal in Shot put at the World Police & Fire Games, Chengdu, China. An absolutely stellar performance!” the tweet read.
SP Kokrajhar Rajen Singh, while extending his best wishes to Narzary, said that it was a good news for the entire state that she won a gold medal. "We are very much proud of her for winning gold medal in shot-put. Hope she wins more world-class sports events in the days to come,” he added.
Hailing from Ghilaguri Dotma village in Kokrajhar, Narzary started her sports career with a 100-m sprinter and later joined the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Kokrajhar centre in 2008.
Earlier, she bagged a gold at the 22nd Tatyana Kolpakova Memorial International Athletics Meet at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on July 17, 2019.
Another achievement by Narzary was a gold medal which she bagged in the shot-put at the 1st North East Olympic Games. The competition was held in Manipur in 2018.
Narzary’s first international competition was in 2013 when she was named in the Indian contingent for the second South Asia Junior Athletics Championship. The competition was held in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
The same year she clinched a gold medal with a throw of 12.09 m in women’s shot-put in the National Inter-Zonal Athletics Championship held in Kerala from September 22-24, 2013. This was followed by her securing the first position in the East Zone Athletics Championship held in Ranchi.
