Despite repeated requests to govts on both sides of the border about the poor state of the bridge, authorities paid no heed to it, allege locals of the area
Guwahati: The lone road connecting Assam and Nagaland in Sonari of Assam’s Charaideo district was severed after the wooden bridge over Nailong river in Namtola locality collapsed on Tuesday.
Public carrier vehicles and people in large numbers coming for business from both sides were stranded after the wooden bridge falling under the main inter-state route sagged down.
As per sources, the wooden bridge was in a dilapidated condition for some time and also happened to be the prime overpass for vehicles plying between the bordering states, it suddenly collapsed while an offloaded dumper made a pass through on Monday.
Although no lives were lost as the dumper fell from the bridge and landed on the river, the truck driver, identified as Homen Konwar sustained severe injuries and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital.
Reportedly, the unpacked dumper fell off the wooden bridge that was already in a poor condition as it was on its way to load boulders from Nagaland and bring it back to Assam via the same route.
It has also been informed that, heavy loaded vehicles coming from both side of the bordering states continued to ply without any worry over the wooden bridge for the past many years despite of its decrepit state.
Meanwhile, it has been alleged that despite repeated requests to governments on both sides of the border about the poor state of the bridge, authorities were less than bothered and failed to give a positive response over the past years.
Speaking to media, a local youth said that the bridge was left in a dilapidated condition for long and it required immediate repairing but the authorities paid no heed to it.
“And as an outcome, this mishap has happened and locals from both the states have to suffer now as communication is totally cut off,” he added
Moreover, authorities from the Greenply Industries Lmited, set up in Nagaland that utilised the wooden bridge as the main pass through to transport their finished products to Assam, also acted less concerned to repair the bridge despite repeated requests made by the locals.
