Locals of Lumbajong in Karbi Anglong also had to pull the ailing old man in a hand-driven cart for miles for treatment -- all due to the absence of a bridge on Chomna river
Diphu: In a shocking incident, a sick, elderly man had to be pulled by a cart by locals and carried on shoulders while crossing the Chomna river to reach a nearby hospital in Lumbajong MAC (Member of Autonomous Council) area in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Sunday.
At a time when the ruling BJP government is blowing its trumpet of bringing development at all levels of society by providing health facilities even at remotest areas of the country, locals of Sarmen Hanse village under the Lumbajong MAC constituency of Karbi Anglong district were forced to carry an elderly man who had been suffering from fever for over a week in a hand-pulled cart to reach the nearby hospital in the locality.
Shocking visuals that are with the EastMojo, show local youths crossing a river under miserable condition carrying the ailing elderly man on their shoulder, besides pulling him for miles in a hand pulled cart to reach the nearby hospital.
Speaking to media, a local villager expressing grief over their condition informed that they decided of shifting the ailing elderly man to a nearby hospital only after water levels of the Chomna river in the locality receded to a normal level in the past days and the life risk in crossing the river got reduced.
“The old man has been suffering from severe fever for over past 10 days, but we were not been able to shift him to hospital as the water in Chomna river was high with heavy current, and there was no bridge over the river through which we can move easily,” a local said.
Alleging negligence of the ruling government in providing adequate facilities to people living in remote areas of the district, another villager expressed that people residing in the locality have been witnessing hardships and had to face many obstacles while moving to different places over the past years and even till date.
“A good road and a bridge build over the river will solve many of our daily problems, adding to reduce in death and loss of life in untoward incidents,” the villager added.
Significantly, earlier on July 7 this year, a woman was swept away in high current while crossing the Difloo river in Dolamara area of Karbi Anglong district of state. The deceased had been been identified as Lodep Rongpharpi, a resident of Dolamara area in the district.
