Guwahati: In a bid to ensure safety and security to women passengers, the Rangiya division of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reserved seating-cum-luggage rake (SLR) coaches with pink colour.

A press release from NFR said that the designated coaches will help women travelling alone or with children to easily identify them on the platform even during rush hour.

The initiative made by the Rangiya division of NFR was placed into operation in passenger trains bearing number 55817 / 55818, 55803 / 55804 and 55809 / 55810 which run between New Bongaigaon and Guwahati. Similar allocation has also been done in passenger train no 55895 / 55896 which runs between Rangiya and Murkongselek.

“Starting yesterday, [Friday] Rangiya Division of NFR has started earmarking one coach exclusively for ladies in train no 55817 and 55809, two very popular passenger trains running to full capacity between Bongaigaon and Guwahati. RPF & TC staff have been deployed to ensure adherence,” NFR said on Twitter.

Besides safety of women passengers, persons with disability can also avail of similar benefits depending on the nature of the coach.

The railway authorities will also deploy railway protection force (RPF) and ticket checking staff for the next few days to stabilise the new system. An appeal has been made to all the women passengers to use the earmarked coaches, if such a need arises.

The Rangiya division was formed on April 1, 2003 from Alipurduar railway division with its headquarters located in Rangiya in Assam’s Kamrup district. The division is on the New Bongaigaon-Guwahati segment of Barauni-Guwahati line, and Rangia-Tezpur line of Rangia-Murkongselek segment.

Earlier, Union railways minister Piyush Goyal on his visit to Central Railway's Matunga station had also placed similar emphasis on women safety on preventing of human trafficking, with focus on children and women on railway premises by installing CCTV at the suburban local coaches.
