Guwahati: Union minister of state (independent charge) for youth affairs and sports Kiren Rijiju announced that the third edition of Khelo India Youth Games will be held in Guwahati, Assam from January 18-30 next year. Over 10,000 athletes and officials from across the nation will take part in the mega sporting event, he added.

Taking to Twitter, Rjiju wrote, “I am happy to announce that the 3rd edition of the Youth Games will be held at Guwahati from January 18-30, 2020. The Games will see a participation of more than 10,000 athletes and officials. It will be conducted in partnership with IOA, SGFI & Assam as host State.”

With the first two editions of the games held in Delhi and Pune in 2018 and 2019, respectively, Khelo India Youth Games is a national-level multidisciplinary grassroots game held for two categories -- under-17 school students and under-21 college students. Every year, the best 1,000 kids are given an annual scholarship of Rs 5,00,000 for eight years to prepare themselves for international sporting events.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal gave support for the success of the sporting event by asking the director of Sports Authority of India (SAI), Assam Subhash Basumatary to make a complete assessment of all the sports venues including the available infrastructure and take up the refurbishing work at the earliest.

He also emphasised on Khelo India Youth Games as a brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is organised to give opportunity to the budding players and identify the best talents in the sporting arena and added every effort should be made to provide state of the art sporting facilities to 9,000 players who will be converging in Guwahati from all across the country.

Sonowal said that all the replacement and repair work of all major infrastructure should be taken up immediately and all the venues should be made ready for the youth games. He also asked the functionary concerned for the constitution of a high-level body to look after different aspects of organising the games. He also asked the sports department to give special care in the transportation, immediate medical care and accommodation for the players and other support staff.

Khelo India Youth Games will feature sports disciplines like archery, basketball, badminton, boxing, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, kabbadi, khokho, shooting, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling among others.
