Guwahati: Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi pledged to donate his organs on his 42nd birthday at Jorhat Press Club in Assam’s Jorhat district on Wednesday. The Mariani MLA also donated Rs 1 lakh from his salary requesting the state government to purchase an air ambulance.

Son of former state minister Rupam Kurmi, the first Adivasi graduate woman, the MLA also vowed to donate his kidneys, liver and eyes; further, he pledged his body for furtherance of medical education.

The MLA also signed papers authorising Ekalavya Foundation, a socio-welfare organisation involved in creating awareness on cadaver donation, for the same.

Rupjyoti Kurmi is following the footsteps of his mother, both in the field of politics and in social work. His mother was three-time MLA from Mariani constituency, and Kurmi himself is the legislator from the same seat for the third consecutive time.

Earlier this week, he was seen helping in flood relief with full devotion. The MLA carried rice sacks and other relief materials and also distributed them.

Celebrating his birthday on Wednesday, the Congress MLA hoped that his move will inspire others to do the same.

In March this year, Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi encouraged politicians and godmen to donate organs while addressing surgeons and cardiologists at a function organised by Society for Heart Faiure and Transplantation.
