Diphu: A total of 16 political, student and civil organisations working in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in Assam have jointly called for a 12-hour bandh in the two hill districts with effect from 5 am on July 25.

As per sources, the bandh call has been given by the conglomeration comprising Hills State Demand Council (HSDC), Karbi Students’ Association (Simion Rongphar faction), Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum, Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) and All India Students’ Association (AISA), among others.

Addressing media persons at a press conference held in Lumding, KNCA general secretary Pratima Engheepi said that the conglomeration strongly condemns the recent statement made by Union minister of state for home affairs G Kishan Reddy in Parliament saying that there is no proposal of creating any autonomous state under Aricle 244(A) of the Indian Constitution.

“The people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao are struggling for an autonomous state for the past three decades and the matter cannot be dropped simply," she said.

However, healthcare facility, water supply, electricity and milk supplies have been exempted from the purview of the 12-hour bandh call demanded in the two districts.

Highlighting some of the earlier promises made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, the KNCA general secretary informed that chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had himself committed to the people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao of providing them with Autonomous state status upon his visit to the districts during the recent election campaigns.

“Even the former minister of home affairs Rajnath Singh had promised to the people of the districts of providing them with Autonomous state status in his maiden visit this year,” Engheepi said.

Speaking on the matter, HSDC general secretary Laichan Engleng condemned the BJP government for hurting sentiments of the hills people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.

“Autonomous state is our long standing demand and inspiration and the ruling party is playing with the very sentiments of our people in this regard, so we should uproot the BJP party from our place,” he added.
