Guwahati: Days after the Central and state governments filed a plea seeking an extension, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday extended the deadline for the final publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam from July 31 to August 31 this year.

However, the apex court has rejected the pleas of both the Central and Assam governments seeking 20% sample verification of the population in districts bordering Bangladesh to find out wrongful inclusion or exclusion of names in the final draft of the NRC. The Centre's plea had also sought to suitably modify the time-line fixed for publication of the final list of NRC from July 31 to a future date.

A bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman rejected the plea filed by both the governments in view of the report filed by NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela which clearly stated that 27% re-verification has already been conducted in the process of adjudication of fresh claims and objections.

The top court further quoting reports of the NRC state coordinator informed that that almost 80 lakh names have been automatically re-verified while hearing claims and objections based on the family tree approach and it is even more than the 20% re-verification that was being sought for by both the governments.

Meanwhile, seeking more time for publication of the final NRC, Hajela said that the public engagements were almost over but the prevailing flood situation was causing some difficulties. He added that NRC officials working in state would need some more time to write the final orders.

He further informed that a supplementary list of additional inclusions and final exclusions will be released on July 31 this year but a month’s time is needed to publish the final consolidated NRC.

Earlier, the final draft NRC for Assam was published as directed by the Supreme Court on June 30 last year in which names of over 40 lakh applicants were missed out. Out of the 40 lakh excluded names in the draft NRC at least 36 lakh have filed their claims for inclusion and some of them have proved their citizenship showing their documents in the process.
