5 gold in 19 days: Twitterati heap praises on Hima Das

From President & PM to Bollywood stars, several well-known personalities took to Twitter to congratulate the sprint runner from Assam on her remarkable feat

Guwahati: Moments after Indian sprinter Hima Das bagged a gold -- her fifth in a month -- at the 400-metre race in Prague, Czech Republic on Saturday, congratulatory messages started to flood Twitter. From President of India Ram Nath Kovind to PM Narendra Modi, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachhan, there was no dearth of tweets in recognition of the athlete’s remarkable feat.

Earlier, she won a gold at a 200 m race in Tabor Athletic Meet on Wednesday. Prior to Tabor Athletic Meet, she won three gold at different events including a gold medal in Klado Athletic Meet, Kunto Athletics Meet, and Poznan Athletics Grand Prix.

“India is very proud of @HimaDas8’s phenomenal achievements over the last few days. Everyone is absolutely delighted that she has brought home five medals in various tournaments. Congratulations to her and best wishes for her future endeavours,” tweeted PM Narendra Modi.

Interestingly, President Kovind and Union minister of state for youth affairs and sports Kiren Rjiju took to Das’ native Assamese language to wish her..

Assam’s chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal express his gratitude on her achievement while Sports `Minister of the State Kiran Rjiju wrote “I'm so excited about India's performance in Athletics. Our Golden girl @HimaDas8 ran phenomenally at #NoveMestoAthleticsMeet @HimaDas8 will run her next race on 28th July again. My best wishes.”

Sonowal had actually retweeted Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet, in which the Bollywood mega star had said: “ T 3233 - Hima Das .. the pride of India .. to the Moon and beyond .. indeed but we need to add another Moon for she has done 5 now .. AMAZING”

Noted sand Artist Sudarshan Pattnaik also lauded her achievement by creating a sculpture of the ‘golden girl’ and sharing it on his Twitter handle.

Congratulating her, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma said she is “an exemplary example of solid grit & determination & a huge inspiration to young girls.”

The sprinter’s gold rush began on July 2 at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland where she won her first competitive 200 m race of the year. Followed by this, the 19-year-old secured her second international gold in women’s 200 m at the Kutno Athletics Meet in Poland on July 7, where she clocked 23.97 seconds.

The relentless athlete grabbed her fourth gold of the fortnight when she once again won the 200 m race at the Tabor Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic on July 17. She won in 23.25 seconds, inching closer to her personal best of 23.10 seconds.

On Saturday, she wowed her fans with her fifth gold of the month in the 400-metre race in Czech Republic, recording 52.09 seconds on the clock. This timing is a season-best for Das in the 400-metre event. Her season-best performance had been 52.88 seconds before Saturday. Her personal best is 50.79 seconds, recorded at the Asian Games last year.
