Two-time MP from Kaliabor, Gogoi, along with Tamil Nadu MP Manickam Tagore were appointed as whips to ‘help the chief whip in floor management and other work relating to meetings, etc’
Guwahati: Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi has been appointed as one of the whips for Congress Party in Parliament (CPP), Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
In a letter signed by the chief whip of CPP Kodikunnil suresh, Gogoi along with MP Manickam Tagore from Tamil Nadu were appointed as whips to "help the chief whip in floor management and other work relating to meetings etc."
Thanking Sonia Ganghi for entrusting him with the role, Gogoi wrote on Twitter, "Thank you CPP Chairperson Madam Sonia Gandhiji for appointing me as Parliament Whip for @INCIndia. I will fulfil my responsibilities to my best."
Currently, Congress has 52 members in the Lok Sabha.
Gogoi, son of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, is serving his second term as Parliamentarian from Kaliabor.
Role of a whip
A whip in Indian Parliament is an official appointed to maintain discipline among, secure attendance of, and give necessary information to, members of his party. They are persons who are expected to be a channel of communication between the political party and the members of the party in assembly/Parliament. Also they gauge the opinion of the members and communicate it to party leaders.
