Guwahati: Over a month after EastMojo reported on how a former top cop of Assam Police was availing of government facilities provided to him by the state government even after three years of retirement from service, former Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Khagen Sharma has finally decided to give up all government facilities, including official quarters, vehicles, etc.

Speaking with EastMojo over phone, the former top cop confirmed that he was in the process of shifting from the government quarters that he was putting up all these years to a different location. However, he didn’t disclose about where he was heading to, due to some security reasons.

“I have moved almost all my belongings to my own residence but a few official formalities are to be completed. The process will end within a month. It’s also getting late due to some security reasons,” he added.

Taking about the allegations made on him in the recent past for enjoying government facilities, including government security, even after retirement, the former top cop said that it was a long process and it took many phases in surrendering the security provided to him due to some confidential issues. Sharma added that he was not keeping any extra security personnel with him at present other than the persons put on service from the department itself, keeping note of the security threats on him.

“I would to love to live at my own house rather than settling in official quarters, but I moved here due to security threats on me,” Sharma added.

“When I served as the Inspector General of Police, Special Branch, for three years, I stayed at my personal residence, but later I didn’t find it safe,” he added.

Refuting allegations made against his wife in Mumbai, Sharma clarified that all kinds of facilities provided to his wife were suspended right after his retirement. “People are just pulling in past things in a wrong context,” he said.

Earlier on May 27 this year, an FIR filed was lodged against the former Assam DGP at the high-profile Dispur Police Station by a leading RTI activist of state complaining that he was availing of all government benefits like government quarters, official vehicles, fuel, drivers and security guards, among others, even after his retirement on November 30, 2015.

RTI Activist Dulal Bora in his FIR further alleged that apart from other benefits, Sharma was yet to return two government generators, one at his official residence in Lakhimi Nagar, Hatigaon in Guwahati, and the other at his quarters at the Special Branch complex of Assam Police.

In the FIR, a copy of which is with EastMojo, Bora said that Sharma was still availing of services of Prabin Nath, Rameswar Malakar, Behera Chandra Basumatary of Special Branch; havildar Lonkeswar Nath (Escort Commander), constable Dipankar Roy (escort), Aftab Ahmed (escort), Bhagawan Dutta (escort), Niru Thapa (escort) of 4th Assam Police battalion; Ganesh Das (PSO), Mriganka Phukan (PSO) of SB Organisation; Subrata Suin (Mali) of 9th Assam Police Battalion; Brajen Das (orderly for Mumbai) of 1st APTF; Ram Janam Singh (orderly for Mumbai); and an additional driver for Mumbai.

“Altogether, four drivers, Mintu Lahkar (orderly from 4th Assam Police battalion), two government generators one each at Lakhimi Nagar, Hatigaon under Kamrup (Metro) and at the quarters of the Special Branch of Assam Police, one Mahindra Thar vehicle (bearing registration number AS30 7687) are been availed of by Sharma even after his retirement,” the FIR had alleged.
