Guwahati: Three college students including a girl died after they allegedly jumped into the Brahmaputra river at Chandrapur area on the outskirts of Guwahati in Assam on Monday.
The trio have been identified as Ranjan Deka, Bhargab Deka -- both students of Jagiroad College -- and Trishna Kalita, a student of Chandrapur College.
On being informed, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) immediately rushed to the spot and carried out search operations to trace the victims. Later in the evening, the rescue teams fished out the body of Ranjan while the search for the remaining two ended with the recovery of Bhargab’s body.
As per sources, five students of Jagiroad College in Nagaon district went to a picnic near Chandrapur area located on the outskirts of Guwahati on Monday. Suddenly, Trishna allegedly jumped into the river over an altercation with someone over the phone. Seeing this, her friends present on spot also jumped into the river in an effort to rescue her.
The other two friends, Archana Deka and Dhrubojyoti Hazarika, are reportedly safe.
“She suddenly jumped into the river. Ranjan and Bhargab also jumped to save her, but since none of them knew swimming, they all drowned,” an eyewitness said.
Meanwhile, family members of the deceased students are in a state of shock and grief after they came to know about the incident.
