Cycling the City: Guwahati to observe World Bicycle Day on June 3

NGO ‘Pedal for a Change’ to celebrate occasion with day-long activities such as bicycle rides, discussions, stunt show, games, movies and live music, etc, at Shilpgram

Guwahati: On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, city-based NGO ‘Pedal for a Change’ will organise a day-long event at Shipgram in Guwahati on Monday. Called ‘Cycling the City’, the event will include numerous activities -- all centered around cycling.

The activities will start with four bicycle rides starting at 6 am from four places in the city -- Maligaon, Dighalipukhuri, Nehru Stadium and Chandmari -- and end at Shilpagram. The event is open for all, and free for entry.

Following this, Siddhartha Bhattacharyya, Assam minister of law and order, education and Guwahati development department, will inaugurate the celebrations at 9 am.

The conclave will have four session on the prospects of cycling. In the first one, called PedalX, inspirational cyclist Rachit Kulshreshtha from Pune will speak about his journey.

In the second session titled, ‘How to make Guwahati more Cycling Friendly’, officials from PWD, Guwahati development department, police department and Amit Bhatt, an urban development expert from New Delhi, will participate.

Another discussion by ATDC officials and a few others from the tourism industry will talk about ‘How can cycling be used to promote tourism’. In the last session, people from the sports department, Sports Authority of India (SAI), eminent sports person and a well-known sports entrepreneur from Pune, Divya Tate, will discuss about ‘How to improve cycling as a sport’.

After the conclave, other activities like bicycle stunt show, cycling movies, fun and game activities, and a live music show will take place. The event is open to all and entry is free.

Pedal for a Change, through these activities and dialogues, aspires to see some policy-level discussions regarding creation or implementation of impact-full environmental protection measures. Also, the objective of the event is to start a public discourse regarding how improvement in cycling and investment in cycling infrastructure can lead to a cleaner, greener and healthy environment for the future.
