Basugaon unit of the powerful students’ body suspect the involvement of illegal Bangladeshis in the incident; police investigation is on
Guwahati: Tension grips Assam’s Chirang district after some unidentified miscreants smeared the All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) martyrs’ column at its Basugaon office on Sunday. The ‘Swahid Bedi’ that was smeared with black ink was first spotted by some AASU workers who visited the office on Monday.
Condemning the incident, the Basugaon unit of AASU said that it is an act of disrespecting the 855 martyrs of the 1979 Assam movement. The AASU unit further demanded a strict investigation over the matter as it was the second incident of vandalism in the AASU headquarters reported in Assam in a span of two years.
The AASU members further alleged that the incident might be a handiwork of illegal Bangladeshis as the apex body is fighting to deport them from Assam.
Meanwhile, the police have already started the investigations into the matter and committed that the perpetrators will bought under custody soon.
Earlier in 2017, supporters of the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samanvay Samiti (NIBBUSS) had gone on a rampage and ransacked an AASU office at Silapathar in northern Assam’s Dhemaji district.
