Assam: ‘Alien’ flies create havoc in Sivasagar villages

Schoolchildren are worst affected; insect’s bite causes itching and swelling in body; flies emerging from pile of garbage stacked along Mori Dikhow river, say locals

Guwahati: A rare species of an ‘alien’ fly has been creating havoc for almost a month across six to seven villages in Dikhowmukh in Assam’s Sivasagar district.

Villagers and schoolchildren are facing a tough time following the attack of these alien flies that have spread out to a large area in the region. According to locals, these insects, unlike common houseflies, bite humans and livestock and leave severe itching and swelling in the body of victims.

The flies are being suspected to have emerged from a pile of garbage and solid waste materials that has stacked up in the nearby Mori Dikhow river for several years now. “We are having sleepless night and our kids are not able to attend their schools properly because of these poisonous flies,” a villager said.

Meanwhile, villagers alleged that the district authorities are giving a deaf ear to their requests and are not providing proper medical treatment to them.
