Guwahati: The second phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam on Thursday will see two centenarians exercising their franchise: a 104-year-old woman and a 116-year-old freedom fighter, both from the state’s Hailakandi district.

Saraguna Bibi has never missed the opportunity to cast her vote. Her son, Badruddin Barbhuiya, said that she casts her vote every time and encourages her kids to do the same.

Likewise, Mahamud Ali is eager to cast his vote. The freedom fighter said though things have changed vastly through the years, he will definitely cast his vote. Appealing young voters to exercise their rights, he said there is a long way to go, as even after independence, people in the area use to die of starvation. However, thanks to democracy, poverty and hunger have gone down.

Karimganj will go to polls during the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam on Thursday.
