On Sunday, a resident of the area was allegedly thrashed for selling beef in the local market; video of man surrounded by angry crowd had gone viral on social media
Guwahati: The main accused involved in the mob assault of a man for selling beef in Assam’s Biswanath was arrested on Tuesday, said SP Rakesh Roushan.
Speaking with EastMojo, the Biswanath district SP said that the main accused, identified as Dipen Gogoi (58) of Biswanath, was arrested and remanded to police custody. However, the others involved in the case remain absconding.
A rally was organised in Guwahati city on Tuesday, where people condemned the atrocious act.
Rubbishing media reports that five people were picked up for the act and were later allowed to leave after signing a good behaviour bond under Section 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Roushan said, “Those are all rumours.”
On Sunday, a video surfaced on social media showing an elderly man, petrified and on his knees, surrounded by an angry mob. The man, Soukat Ali (68), was thrashed for allegedly selling beef in the local market.
In the video, the frenzied crowd is seen questioning Ali on whether he has a licence to sell beef. They demanded to know his nationality by asking, “Are you a Bangladeshi? Do you have NRC?”, referring to the National Register of Citizen.
In another video of the same episode, he was also force-fed meat, allegedly pork.
Currently, Ali is undergoing treatment in Biswanath Civil Hospital. He is a local who has been doing business in the area for almost four decades now.
