Itanagar: Arunachalee weightlifter Boni Mangkhya, who recently set a national record in the ongoing Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth, Junior and Senior Championship, was accorded a grand welcome at Naharlagun railway station here by her family members and well wishers on Monday.
Participating in the 55 kg weight category, Boni had lifted a record 171 kg (73 kg in snatch and 98 kg in clean and jerk) to set a new national record in the weightlifting championship.
She also lifted a similar weight in the junior category to bag two gold medals for Arunachal Pradesh in the competition.
Speaking to reporters, Boni said her new goal is to participate in Asian championships, Commonwealth Games and other international events.
Eighteen-year-old Boni, who considers Jhonny Mangkhya, a renowned karateka and her elder sister, as her inspiration, said it was the constant support and guidance of Jhonny that paved the way for her into sports.
Jhonny was the first sportsperson from the state to be selected to represent the country at the Asian Games.
Replying to questions on her record breaking lift at the national championships and her advice to the aspiring weightlifters, Boni said: “One has to be dedicated and disciplined to be a winner, not just in sports but in all aspects of life. Besides, a sportsperson needs a good coach and support.”
Meanwhile, elated by the appreciation received from the people, Boni’s parents hoped that the state government would continue supporting her in her future endeavors and help her bring more laurels to the state and country.
