Itanagar: A decision on taking up last-mile digital connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh on a mission mode was made in the State Broadband Committee (SBC) meeting chaired by chief secretary Naresh Kumar on Wednesday.

The chief secretary reviewed the implementation of the National Broadband Mission in the state in the meeting. For successful implementation of the mission and to ensure last-mile connectivity across the state, the chief secretary said the state government is committed to extending all possible support to the telecom service providers (TSPs).

Acknowledging poor digital connectivity as a hindrance for the ease of doing business even in the government sector, he said the fiberisation, additional towers, fiberisation of telecom towers, and fibre-mapping should begin in the remote areas at the earliest.

To assist the DoT, Kumar directed the State Remote Sensing Application Centre, Itanagar, to prepare a satellite-based village master plan for optical fibre cable to connect the circle headquarters with the district headquarters through broadband connectivity.

He further requested the TSPs in the state to upgrade their at least 3G network services to 4G services for experiencing better telecom and broadband services. In this connection, matters will be taken up with the Centre, he said.

The chief secretary told the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) that permission has already been accorded for the use of street electric poles for small cell and aerial OFC in the state.

To strengthen the connectivity on international borders, he asked the DoT representatives to find feasible ways to provide communications in international border areas in northern Arunachal under the Universal Service Obligation Fund of the DoT.

According to the latest report, the broadband connectivity in villages is 60%, with 2,211 uncovered villages.

Among others, PWD commissioner Kaling Tayeng, IT secretary Anirudh Singh, UD secretary Mitali Namchoom, BSNL general manager BSNL Arung Siram, BBNL general manager Arung Siram were present in the meeting.
