Itanagar: A college student from the Longding district is feared to have drowned in the Noa Dihing River in the Namsai district on Saturday.

The student was identified as Mankai Wangpan (18), a resident of Zedua Village in Longding district.

Wangpan had, along with his two other friends, went to the river for swimming on Saturday, following which the incident reportedly occurred.

Officials said, on receiving information of the incident, a rescue team of the NDRF and the local police were pressed into service and a search and rescue operation was launched, accordingly. 

The team was, however, unable to recover the body of the youth till the time of filing this report.

Rakesh Kumar, the inspector of 12Bn NDRF, said that following a call from the Namsai district administration, a rescue team consisting of 25 personnel was sent to carry out the search operation, early Sunday morning.

“Our team is carrying out the search operation in all the suspected locations and will carry on with it till the time the body of the student is not retrieved,” added Kumar.

Mahadevpur Police investigation officer V Kumar informed that the incident occurred around 11 am on Saturday.

“We initially started a search and rescue operation with the help of local divers. However, we were unable to retrieve the body, after which we sought the assistance of the NDRF with the operation,” he said.

Officials said that the search was suspended on Sunday evening. However, the same would resume on Monday morning.

The missing youth was a student of Venerable Uktara Bethany College, Namsai.
