Tinsukia: A man was killed while two others got seriously injured when a dumper truck skidded off National Highway 113 and rolled down into a deep gorge between Hayuliang and Hawai, near Supani village, in Arunachal's Anjaw district on Tuesday morning.

The deceased person has been identified as Sarbeswar Barma, the driver of the vehicle, hailing from Nalbari district of neighbouring Assam. Those injured are Jayanta Keot from Assam's Biswanath Charali and Moniram Daimary from Sonitpur district of the state.

Speaking with EastMojo, administration and HR official of Sushee Infra and Mining Limited (for Khupa Hayuliang Hawai road project) A Upender said that an empty dumper with Karnataka registration number was returning from work to base camp when around 5.30 in the morning, the dumper fell in a deep gorge. "Three of our employees were on the dumper when the ill-fated vehicle met with an accident. The driver of the vehicle died on the spot while two of our field employees were severely injured," he added.

The vehicle has been completely destroyed, he added.

"We reported the matter to civil administration and army for immediate help," Upender said, adding: "Army personnel, who reached before the civil administration team, played a significant role in rescuing the two injured employees."

"We thank Lt Colonel Pushpendra Singh from the Indian Army for responding promptly to our distress call and thereby saving two precious lives," he said.

According to Upender, the injured persons were given first-aid by Army and doctors from civil administration before being admitted to the civil hospital at Hayuliang. "They have been referred to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Assam's Dibrugarh and their condition remains to be critical," he said.

"We are making an arrangement to send the dead body to their family members at Nalbari district in Assam," he added.

Khupa Hayuliang Hawai road, an important project of the Central government from the defence point of view, is aimed at double-laning the existing national highway to boost road connectivity along the Indo-Sino border in the easternmost part of the country.

According to sources in the Army, at 8.00 am, an information was received about an accident in which a dumper fell into a gorge. "We launched a team around 8.15 am and started rescue operation without wasting any time. During the operation, two persons injured were evacuated from the 200-metre deep gorge to the road head and provided first-aid to the injured persons," the sources said.

A dead body was also recovered and evacuated, the sources added.
