Itanagar: An FIR has been registered at the women’s police station in Itanagar against ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Goruk Pordung for allegedly raping a woman.

As per the FIR, the alleged incident took place on October 12 at a hotel in the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh.

In her complaint, the victim has said that the MLA called her around 8-9 pm and asked her to meet her in the hotel where he wanted to the discuss some matters related to a primary health centre (PHC) in his home constituency Bameng of East Kameng district.

“After I reached the hotel, I waited for him outside. After sometime he asked me to come inside. Accordingly, I went in with a thought that there would some of his staff like his personal security officer or assistant. But I was shocked to see him alone inside the room. Though I was scared to get inside, he called me in and offered a glass of wine. I refused to drink the same but he forced me to have it and locked the door,” the FIR read.

I asked him what issue was there to discuss but he instead started to molest me and then raped me, the complaint added.

The victim has also alleged that the legislator physically abused her and threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to others. "He left me alone at the hotel after which I called my husband," she said adding that she was later taken home by some persons she knew.

Speaking to media persons, Capital superintendent of police (SP) Tumme Amo said that a case has been registered and an inquiry will be initiated accordingly.

When questioned over the delay in registering the case, Amo said: “It was because a preliminary investigation had to be initiated following a counter complaint from the MLA.”

Amo said that the police are looking at all possible angles. “We are investigating whether it is case a rape or of a consensual relationship because the lady had gone to the hotel on her own at around 10 pm,” the SP said, adding that the staff of the hotel in their statements have also confirmed that both the accused and the victim had visited the hotel on the particular night.

“Justice will be delivered,” the SP said.

Meanwhile, MLA Pordung termed the allegation “politically motivated and a move to tarnish his image”.

In a clarification, Pordung said that “no such incident of rape took place on October 12 and it was also not the first time they had met each other". The MLA said he had also helped the woman financially on her request in a couple of occasions. He further accused the lady of “seducing” him during their meeting that took at a hotel before October 12.

Talking about Saturday’s incident, he said: “I was at my friend’s place when she constantly called me and asked to come to near PYBSS hotel by all means. She said she wanted to discuss matters in regards to the expenditure her husband had incurred during the election preparation earlier this year. On continuous persistence, I reached the hotel around 10.15 pm and thereafter we headed towards Paramount Hotel and booked a room jointly to discuss the matter at her own free will.”

“There was no force exerted on her in any manner. After the discussions, we parted with an assurance to discuss the matter further to solve the financial crisis being faced by her family. However, after she left, she texted me saying that a group of youths were roaming outside the hotel and I shouldn’t venture out as she apprehended that some untoward incident would happen," he added.

Accordingly, I left the hotel after those youths left the vicinity of the hotel. There was no question of rape in any manner as the staff of the hotel witnessed everything,” Pordung’s clarification read.

Meanwhile, speaking with EastMojo, Pordung said that the allegations came after he denied helping the woman to become a mediator in contacting the chief minister. "She wanted me to ask the chief minister to reimburse the amount her husband had spent in the recent assembly election as he also wanted to contest it," Pordung alleged.

BJP state president Tapir Gao, when contacted, said that he was travelling and was unaware of the development. “I just reached Pangin and I have no information of regarding the incident. I will, however, try to gather the details,” he said.
