Arunachal by-poll: Support Tirong Aboh opponent, warns ‘circular’
Itanagar: Ahead of the by-election for Khonsa West constituency in Arunachal Pradesh -- left vacant by the killing of sitting MLA Tirong Aboh -- a ‘circular’ is being circulated across the residents of the region through social media ‘warning’ them to vote for Phawang Lowang.
Lowang was the lone candidate against Aboh in the state assembly elections held in April this year. The 42-year-old Aboh, his 20-year-old son Loggem Aboh and party general secretary Wangngoi Hakhun, besides eight others, were killed in an ambush near Bogapani, around 20 km from the Tirap district headquarters of Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh, after the four-vehicle convoy they were travelling in was stopped and heavily fired upon on May 21 this year.
The date of the by-election to Khonsa West is yet to be announced.
As per the circular, the Ollos (a sub-tribe in Tirap district) are lacking behind compared with other communities and improvement could be brought only through political power.
The circular also reads that no group or individual should put up a candidate other than the present one (Phawang Lowang) as he belongs to the Ollo community.
“Failing to comply with this warning, serious action would be taken and if necessary even up to eternal punishment,” reads the circular.
When questioned, Tirap SP Kardak Riba said that though a case has not been registered, the police are inquiring about it. “This may be someone’s notorious activity ahead of the by-election,” said Riba. “No circular (hard copy) could be found as of now but an image of the circular is everywhere on social media,” he added.
Riba also said that he and his team spoke with the three aspiring candidates from Lazu village (village of Ollo tribe) including Lowang, Yangli Humtok and former MLA Yumsen Matey.
Lowang was the only opponent of Aboh in the last elections. He (Lowang) fought the elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.
