Arunachal: Seppa hosts 1st Taachi Pordung memorial badminton event

Seppa: The first edition of Taachi Pordung Memorial District Level Inter-Club Badminton Championship got underway at the Officers' Badminton Club in Seppa, the headquarters of Arunachal Pradesh's East Kameng district on Friday.

Organised by the East Kameng Badminton Association (EKBA) in collaboration with the Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA), the three-day tournament is sponsored by Bameng legislator Goruk Pordung in the memory of his late mother.

In all, 90 shuttlers representing five different badminton clubs of the district are participating in the championship, the finals of which would be held on Sunday.

Chayangtajo MLA Hayeng Mangfi, who attended the inaugural ceremony of the competition as chief guest, in his address, announced that Seppa will soon turn into a sports hub as many infrastructure of several sporting disciplines are being built in and around the township.

Encouraging the youngsters to participate in such competitions, Mangfi said that one can not only gain physical and mental fitness through sports, but can also make it a profession. Mangfi further congratulated the organising committee and wished the participants success.

MLA Pordung said that the championship would be converted into a state-level tournament in the future. “This year, the tournament is named after my mother and so will it be for the next two more years. However, after that, the championship will be named after my father," Pordung said.

Executive members of the EKBA also spoke on the occasion. The technical team for the completion is led by chief referee of the tournament -- ASBA’s Grade II umpire Mode Nilling.
