Justice (retd) PS Saikia takes oath as 1st Lokayukta of Arunachal

Former senior bureaucrat Yeshi Tsering also appointed member of the anti-corruption ombudsman of the state

Itanagar: In its fight against corruption, Arunachal Pradesh has set an example by appointing its first Lokayukta in the state on Thursday.

Governor BD Mishra administered the oath of office to Justice (retired) Prasanta Kumar Saikia and former bureaucrat Yeshi Tsering as chairperson and member of Lokayukta, Arunachal, respectively. Justice (Retired) Saikia becomes the first Lokayukta, the anti-corruption ombudsman, of the state.

The oath was administered at a ceremony held at Durbar hall in Raj Bhawan, Itanagar on Thursday.

With this solemn event, the state of Arunachal Pradesh shall usher into a new era of transparency and accountability, said chief minister Pema Khandu through a social media post.

Deputy chief minister Chowna Mein, cabinet ministers, legislators and top bureaucrats attended the swearing-in ceremony of the new Lokayukta.

The Lokpal and the Lokayukta Act, which envisages appointment of a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in states to look into cases of corruption against certain categories of public servants, was passed in 2013. Upon selection, the chairperson and members shall hold office for a term of five years or till they attain 70 years of age.
