WATCH: How ‘NSCN(IM)’ threatened Arunachal NPP before Aboh killing
Audio clip of unidentified militant threatening local National People’s Party worker Noknyiam Nokbi surfaces; was doing the rounds in Khonsa long before party men were targeted in area
Khonsa, Tirap: Days before locals could sense the anti-National People's Party (NPP) wave in the region -- with party workers getting increasingly targeted by insurgent groups -- an audio clip of a recorded phone conversation was doing the rounds in Khonsa town of Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district.
The phone call was allegedly made to Noknyiam Nokbi, an active National People’s Party (NPP) worker from Laho village, by an unknown person who claimed to be an NSCN(IM) leader.
Not knowing the weightiness of the call, Nokbi casually forwarded the call recording to one of his friends, Wangsi Atoa, who is also an active NPP worker.
In the call recording, the unknown person is heard threatening the NPP worker to stop preaching against NSCN(IM) or else face dire consequences.
The suspected NSCN(IM) leader pressures Nokbi not to lead or organise any meeting where they (slain Khonsa West MLA Tirong Aboh and supporters) speak against NSCN (IM). He (the unidentified man) is also heard talking about Jalin Hakhun, who was one of the 11 people, including Aboh, killed by insurgents in an ambush near Bogapani in Tirap district on May 21. Hakhun was the president of Dadam Area Youth Association (DAYA) and was actively campaigning for 2019 elections in favour of Aboh.
The threat call to Nokbi was allegedly made in the later part of March. Incidentally, a few days later, on March 29, two NPP workers were attacked by suspected NSCN (IM) militants at Kheti village in Tirap district.
One of them, NPP worker Jaley Anna was beaten to death.
Meanwhile, Nokbi and Wangsi Atoa are being interrogated by National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with the two survivors Nyajut Hakhun (maid) and Nokliam Tekwa (PSO).
“Nokbi is being questioned over the fact that he was singled out, among the hordes of NPP workers, to be called by the NSCN(IM) leader on phone,” a source said. The NIA reportedly is of the suspicion that the phone call was made by someone known to Nokbi, added the source.
